Bright colors and true neon are not the same thing. Swim trunks can look colorful on the rack without being fluorescent. True fluorescent neon absorbs UV light and re-emits some energy as visible light, creating the intense, vivid appearance associated with high-visibility color.

VISIBILITY CHANGES WITH THE WATER
Does swim trunk visibility change in pools, lakes and at the beach?
Yes. Water color, clarity, depth, lighting, reflections and background all affect how easy swimwear is for you to visually track. Because visibility changes by environment, HiViz recommends different neon colors for different water conditions rather than naming one universal best swimsuit color.
POOL
Blue water, pool finishes, reflections and crowded decks can all affect contrast. Fluorescent neon gives the eye a strong visual cue in a busy pool environment.
LAKE
Lake water is often darker and less clear than a pool. Depth, sediment and vegetation can change visibility quickly, making strong color contrast especially important.
OCEAN
Surf, foam, sunlight, sand and crowds create a different background. High-visibility color can help a child stand out against the visual activity around them.

What swim trunk colors are easiest to see in different water conditions?
There is no single best swim trunk color for every setting. The strongest contrast changes with the water and background, so these are the HiViz neon colors we recommend starting with for each environment.

For darker or less clear water, we recommend starting with strong fluorescent colors that create bold contrast.

Are neon swim trunks easier to see than regular bright-colored trunks?
They can be. A color can look bright without being fluorescent. True neon interacts with UV light differently and can appear more vivid, although actual visibility still depends on the water and surrounding conditions.
